Bruno Sarmento is Assistant Researcher at INEB/i3S (University of Porto, Portugal), and Assistant Professor at IUCS (Porto, Portugal) since 2008. He is also Visiting Professor of the Post-Graduate School, UniOeste (Brasil) and at Queen’s University, Belfast (UK). In 2007, he held his PhD in Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology at University of Porto, in collaboration with Queen’s University (Canada), University of Copenhagen (Denmark) and University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). From 2007 to 2012 he was Post-Doc at University of Porto, in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen, and in 2012 he established an independent team at INEB. His current research in focused on the development of functionalized nanoformulations of biopharmaceutical drugs with interest in diabetes, cancer and infectious diseases. He is also specialized in mucosal tissue engineering models to validate functionalized nanomedicines and to perform in vitro/in vivo correlation. He has published more than 290 papers in international peer reviewed (ISI) journals, most in top journals, as well as several book chapters, proceedings and edited books. He is also Editor of the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of 11 international journals, including the prestigious Journal of Controlled Release, Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery, and Referee for top-ranked journals in his area of expertise, and for international funding agencies. Bruno Sarmento is the Chair of the Nanomedicine and Nanoscale Delivery Focus Group of the Controlled Release Society, has more than 50 invited/selected talks in national and international meetings, and was awarded several distinctions.
